Limestone tiles cleaned

Limestone back patio tiles cleaned and sealed in a property in Hampstead. Limestone needs to be treated with allot of care when cleaning as it is highly sensitive to acidic chemicals.

Rust removed from this limestone tiled patio above . Its quite time consuming to remove rust from porous stone as the rust runs very deep into the stone. The rust remover therefore needs to be re applied several time to slowly remove the rust bit by bit

Professional guide on how to clean exterior stone and tile patio

For those who like DIY , here is a quick professional guide on how we clean your exterior tile and stone patios to achieve effective results.

  1. Thoroughly remove big bits of growth and loose pointing from the tiles or stone. A scraper, flat headed screwdriver ,brush and pan will work well.
  2. Apply a mold removing chemical with a sprayer or a watering can. Mold removing products are readily available from builders depots etc. Mold removing chemicals damage plants and can hurt you so be careful! The chemicals need to be left down for a while to work. You can always repeat the process if the mold and growth was not all removed.
  3. Once the mold removing chemical has done its job , use a good powered pressure washer to thoroughly rinse the chemical from the stone or tiles. Its important not to damage the stone with the pressure of the water jet. So do tests to see if the jet is removing the stone surface or causing any damage.
  4. Do not allow the pressure washer to spray the mold removing chemical back in your face. Use protective eye wear etc. The chemical would have weakened the material causing the staining and the pressure of the washer seems to easily blast it out after the chemicals have been used.
  5. Use a rust removing cleaner ( readily available from major tiling brands) to remove any rust stains or spots. Follow the instructions on the container for how to use these, they are easy to use but you may need to repeat the process several times to get results.
  6. Any other stains that have not been removed can usually be cleaned with a steam cleaner and a combination of localized high alkaline and acidic cleaning agents. A steam cleaner of about 3.5-4.5 bar can be bought for as little as £90 and is an invaluable tool for removing stains of any sort. Here is a very good acidic cleaning agent that you can use, it is safer than brick acid , Fila Deterdeck  (do not use acids on marble and limestone, do a test before using acid). Most tile shops will have a good high alkaline detergent cleaner.
  7. Re point and repair any tiles that need it.
  8. Thoroughly seal the stone or tiles with an appropriate sealer to preserve your cleaning work.
  9. Here is a good Video that explains allot of these steps and will be good for your information.
